Frances Thayer, CLAG member and multi-talented professional artist, will demonstrate her new-found love of the ancient art of painting with wax.
BIO: My journey as an artist has spanned some eight decades, beginning formally with classes at the Museum of Art in Houston. Over the years I have been blessed with a number of fine teachers and have worked with many media. Charcoal and India ink on paper were my first sketching materials. Soon brush strokes of watercolor paint brought life to my black and white ink sketches.
Recently, however, I rediscovered encaustic art while cleaning and rearranging my studio. A big switch was turned on and no obstacle has gotten in my way. I re-entered the encaustic world with a newfound zeal. I am at home with this art medium that is more than 2,000 years old. The first known encaustic paintings were the face portraits on the Fuyam mummies. Not only are the colors vibrant, but the durability spans centuries. The paint is pure beeswax mixed with damar resin. The color is derived by adding powdered pigments into molten wax mixture. The word encaustic means "to burn in." Molten pigmented wax medium is applied to a rigid, porous substrate. Each application is burned in with a heat source that renders the artist's intention durable.
Wednesday, August 8, 2012: Oil Painting
Patsy Ledbetter Strode, local professional artist, will demonstrate the various stages that the artist goes through to complete an oil painting.
Wednesday, September 12, 2012: "A Kiss Glass"
